Husk Restaurant Named Best New Restaurant in America by Bon Appetit

To contact us Click HERE

In today’s hyper technological world where you are more likely to see diners scanning their smart phones than conversing with each other it is no wonder that Bon Appetit magazine crowned Husk Restaurant in Charleston, South Carolina as America’s best new restaurant.  America… set down your phones and reconnect at Husk Restaurant!
Sean Brock, James Beard “Best Chef Southeast” award winner in 2010 conceived this elevation of southern comfort food with a contemporary twist. Just like when grandma used to spend hours preparing the big family meal, Brock, chef de cuisine Travis Grimes and their equally passionate staff toil many hours and even days to bring a big, heaping plate of love to each diner’s table. You can feel the love and appreciate the effort put into every morsel. A meal at Husk should be savored and discussed.  Its food to sustain the soul and well as the body, just like grandma used to make.  It is the perfect opportunity to reconnect with family and friends.
Enjoy a few moments in the courtyard before entering the restored, Victorian structure.  The beautifully renovated space blends the charm and grace of its historic origins with a modern, minimalist finish. The bar is housed next door in an adjoining structure with exposed brick and plenty of light.  The upstairs offers a wonderful repose with friends before adjourning next door for a memorable meal.  Uh, but be sure folks this isn’t a grandma’s meat and three joint with yeast rolls.
Brock, sometimes referred to as a country farmer or a dirt chef, combines his love of agriculture, animal husbandry and cooking in a celebration of all things southern.  Brock doesn’t deny the march of time and change.  He isn’t trying to recreate the southern classics.  Husk Restaurant offers a modern approach to southern dining with playful interpretations and deft vision of what it means to eat in the south in 2011.
Every ingredient the chefs use to craft the dishes must be sourced from the south.  The daily menu evolves as new ingredients are harvested and delivered to the restaurant.  My dear neighbor, Joseph Fields, provided the peanuts that Brock and staff crafted into a velvety hummus appetizer last night.
Charleston offers a bevy of products brought to the Lowcountry by African ancestors, native Americans and Europeans.  Benne seeds, field peas, sweet corn, Carolina Gold Rice, Anson Mills stone grits, locally made Giddy Goat Cheese and Rev Taylor Butter Beans speak to the diverse ancestry and influence in our great, coastal city.
It’s hard to say what will be on the menu tonight.  The chefs are still receiving the day’s harvest and collaborating on the best ways to celebrate their products.  One thing is for sure.  The love and passion for all things southern will be served at Husk Restaurant tonight.  Slip in your seersuckers or sundress and leave your phone at home tonight.  If you are planning a vacation to Kiawah or Seabrook Island, don't miss this dining delight during your next visit to Charleston, South Carolina.  Visit their website at http://www.huskrestaurant.com/

Charleston South Carolina tops Conde Nast Traveler Rating List

To contact us Click HERE

The Holy City can add another accolade to its growing reputation as a top tourist destination.  Conde Nast Traveler, a widely read travel publication announced that its readers voted Charleston, South Carolina as the Number One tourist
destination in America and number three in the world!
Charleston knocks San Fransisco from the US top spot, a spot
solidly held for almost two decades.  Area officials are elated to learn of this recent recognition.  Charleston already enjoyed the moniker "friendliest city in America."The word is out that the Holy City offers visitors an unbelievable combination of attractions including top rated beaches, historic architecture, eco tourism, world class dining and the most gracious professionals in the hospitality industry.

Charleston boasts the last two James Beard award winners for the best chef in the southeast United States.  Culinary options abound with an abundance of fresh local ingredients; inspiration from the strong cultural influences of Europe, Africa and the Caribbean; and a plethora of skilled staff from Johnson and Wales culinary school and Trident Culinary Institute.  Rice and grits are staples in regional dishes.  Locals often rank their favorite dining spot by their shrimp and grits.  Perlou, also called Perlow or Pillau is a historic dish that owes its uniqueness to Carolina Gold rice.  This long grain rice absorbs the wonderful flavors imparted by the ingredients.   Regional variations include varying combinations of seafood, meats and seasoning.

After a memorable meal, there is nothing better than strolling around the peninsula  marveling at the historic homes and period architecture.  The Charleston Single house represents a prevalent design of the 18thcentury where the narrow layout takes advantage of the coastal breezes to offer cross ventilation before the days of air conditioning.  The design includes double verandas, called piazzas, where residents sought relief from the summer sun.  Charleston is often referred to as the Holy City due to the number of churches that dot the peninsula.  The spires outline the skyline as one travels across the Ashley River bridge.  Church Street is aptly named.  There are a number of houses of worship on this corridor.

For the adventurous traveler, enjoy a kayak tour meandering through the tidal creeks throughout the low country.  Many boat companies offer fishing trips, sunset tours, and harbor cruises.  Porpoises are prevalent here and you seldom miss them out on the waterways!

With all these amazing options, don't forget including a stay at the beach!  Beachwalker Park at Kiawah Island is recognized as one of the top public beaches in the United States.  What better way to enjoy your Charleston experience than combining it with a stay through Pam Harrington Exclusives.  We offer the highest quality private accommodations on Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island. Enjoy 11.5 miles of private beach, luxury homes and villas, award winning golf, resort tennis and even equestrian activities.   Our gracious hospitality, attention to detail, and custom collection of properties make us the number one choice for accommodations on Kiawah and Seabrook Island.  Click here for our website

A Place for a Political Debate

To contact us Click HERE
Finally, here is the place for all on Kiawah and Seabrook Island to have a robust political debate. This blog was developed to allow folks on Kiawah and Seabrook Island to have political discussion, heated or otherwise, without anyone slapping your hands for any remark. All I ask is that we keep the language civil, or at least try. I hope to add to this blog with an ever expanding list of hot local topics, as well as some not so local topics also. I close with this thought; Liberalism is a mental disorder.

Recommendations from Local Islanders

To contact us Click HERE
After Seven years, I have collected a great resource of Vendors, Contractors and Suppliers that have been recommended by the residence of Kiawah Island. The wonderful thing about Kiawah Island is that when someone does a great job we are proud to sing the praises. The opposite is also true...but here I am only going to focus on the positive. Many homeowners have requested a site to go and see the "Angie's List" for Kiawah so here it is. I will try to group the contractors and vendors into categories that are easy to find. Again, these are people that have been recommended by the homeowners of the island.

Caterers For Kiawah Island

Caterers
Since the Holidays are right around the corner. I thought I would start the recommendations with catering companies that were suggested.  I will add contact information as I find it.

Crave was suggested and it is located just off the island on Bohicket Road.

Hamby's is another suggested caterer. This would be great for a brunch or lunch event.

Call Chef Andy @ 843.860.5347. Email at: http://www.blogger.com/www.heirloomcooking1@hotmail.com"Great chef for house parties. Knows low country fare and wines. He can pretty much cook whatever you desire. Andy shops, cooks, serves - he does it all."

I can not rave enough about Gourmet Bay.  Wonderful to work with and very helpful price wise.
Newton (Newton Farms) was very nice to work with but my experience with the food, puts Gourmet Bay way in front.
(Don't miss the tomato pie!!)

I strongly recommend Tracy Bentz with Island Outdoor Kitchen and Catering.  His number is 843-830-3024.

Trace Paradis, formerly chef at Red Sky is very good. You can email him at bigchefp@hotmail.com also Enan Parezo is excellent. His email is enan@chefenan.com. Both will cook only, or cook and serve as requested.  Both have online menus as well.

You might also want to try Bobo Lee at SOUTHERN AFFAIRS - 843-869-9003.  Here is a short blub about Bobo in Men's Vogue:
http://www.mensvogue.com/food/articles/2007/12/oyster_pie%22%3Ehttp://www.mensvogue.com/food/articles/2007/12/oyster

I have found Hege's to do exceptional catering.

As more come in, they will be added to the list.

"If you're staying more than a week-end and you have a car on the island (two conditions that may
eliminate most of the respondents) it's cheaper to rent a car at CHS, drive to the island, retrieve your own car and then turn in the rental within 24 hrs. A one-day rental is <$30. Repeat process the day before departure and you have transport to/from CHS for about 1/2 the going taxi rate".

"Jerry Farber is great, reliable, reasonable.  (c) 484.951.5827.  Another driver, Larry Blasch: (c)843.412.5704. The plane was an hour late. Landed at 1 a.m. and he was there to bring her to Kiawah".

"Beres Executive Limousines and Charleston Executive Limo both offer discounts to Kiawah members. Beres (224-8631) offers a 10% discount and Charleston Executive (746-9000) offers a 20% discount".

"We have used Sammy's Transportation Services for years and years.  Their number is 814-9660. We found them to be much more reasonable than any other of the services. Auto Detailing

With the beautiful warm weather which we love, comes something that we battle throughout spring and summer on the island......POLLEN!!!! Yes, the dreaded pollen is seen everywhere especially on that beautiful car that now has a hazy green moldy look.  With the addition of the Market at Freshfields, we can get gas, a snack and yes even a drive thru car wash.  It is the quick and easy way to wash the car.  Here is a list of more auto detailing companies that were recommended.

Houston Smalls does just what you want and does it very well.  His phone
 number is 843 607-2480.

We took our car with mold to Bendt Brothers Auto Upholstery on Sam Rittenburg. Nice
people.  Did a perfect job.  556-3013

Cactus carwash on 17 just past 526 is great.  (843) 571-7789.

Dealing with Mold in First Floor Area under your Home

To contact us Click HERE
Here are some recommendations for dealing with the mold that appears under your home on the first floor garage/ storage area.  The first floor areas on Kiawah Island are usually unconditioned and have a lot of moisture inside.  The mold usually appears on the ceiling under the duct work.

Have spray foam installed under floor and on the duct lines.

Dehumidifiers work if you seal off air intake from the louvers. Ours are
from Sears and the condensate drains to the outside.

Here is a great list for Windshield Replacement recommendation from Kiawah Islanders.  The long and beautiful drive from Charleston to Kiawah Island can definitely take your breath away.  It is a slow drive into world long forgotten lined with the most beautiful Oaks in the land.  Sometimes, that beautiful trip is interrupted by a rock or some other object that hits your windshield.  Take care of it with ease with these recommendations.

Depending on the size of the chip, Safelite will sometimes simply
repair it on site. Amazingly undetectable, after the repair is made,
also much cheaper and faster.

Roofer Recommendations from Kiawah Island

To contact us Click HERE
Here are many recommendations for Roofers that work on Kiawah Island and were recommended by the people of the island.  I made a special note by the comapny that recieved the most positive recommedations for a roofer.

"We used Mccoy's construction one year ago and they did a great job. Cell
phone # 843 478 7766."

"Harborside Remodeling, (843) 559-9933, replaced our shingled roof efficiently and expertly. Our old roof was in very bad condition; so patching in new with old was not an option. We were extremely pleased."

"I would highly recommend Pulliam Home Remodeling (843) 763-9969. They replaced the roof on
our house around this time last year. They did a great job, and had the
lowest bid of the three bids we got. (Someone on the list recommended them
to us, and we greatly appreciated their recommendation.)"

"KC Lombard did a nice job for us a few years ago. His number is   843-296-0314."

"I have received positive feedback from property owners who have used
Carter-Lambert for their renovations. They handle all aspects of a
renovation, from home expansions,  roofs, and interior upgrades. They are
located in Freshfields.  Ask for Marc Lambert, (843) 768-3080 x 115."

I have checked references on Tri-County Roofing and they checked out very well. Shannon or Travis Hawkins 572-2175 or 871-2749."

"KC Lombard did a good job for us at a reasonable price
4 years ago. You may have to call more than once, but he will give you an honest assessment of the
state of your existing roof and whether or not you need to replace?it.  843-296-0314."

"Phillip Grainger is a great, reliable roofer. 509-1006"

Rick DeVries  East Coast Roofing 442-3071.  I think he did a very good job with shingle and with copper.

Leon Godfrey (367-4417) has done a good of roof repairs for us, and I think
he does complete roofs also.

"I'm getting quotes now, and the best price came from John Glyder: (843)
568-4584."

"I am very pleased with Leon Godfrey. Office-843-766-8081. Mobile 843-367-4417."

**Just a note to the readers, Leon Godfrey received more recommendations than anyone else on this list for roof repair/replacement on Kiawah Island.**

"After Hurricane Hugo in 1989,I believe, a new roof was installed on our
house on Surfsong. In the year 2000 we bought the house and have occupied
it since.
On two or three occasions minor leaks or blown off shingles had to  be
repaired. The roofer was Leon Godfrey 843 766 8081 and he came back and
made the repairs quickly and at no cost. This was ten to twenty years after
the installation. The roof is now 22 years old and he happily told me it
has a few  more years left.  I will have him re-roof the house when the time comes."

"I just had a similar need three weeks ago.  I asked around and could
not get any recommendations so just went to Google and came up with Pro
Roofing and Siding
Pat Gillespie is their estimator at 412 3632.  He is a
pleasant fellow, came out and gave me a professional appraisal without
trying to sell me more than I needed.  Within just a few days his crew was
out fixing it.  The shingles matched well, the crew was pleasant, and with
several hard rains there have been no leaks."

"Wells Roofing did a great job for us.  Very honest and true craftsmen. They did
an incredible job with our gutters, as well as the roof.   Their ph # is
843-881-8868"

"I just had my roof replaced by Harper Construction (843-860-6970), and they
were fast, very professional, and did an excellent job of cleaning up
afterwards."

"Don Ross at Ross Roofing is excellent.  We just used them to replace all the
roofs at the Beach Townhouses and they did a great job."
"We used Williford Roofing and were pleased with the work and cleanup."  "I used Williford Roofing. They were excellent & priced right.  R.J. 2007317.   Paul Szem 7681475."
"Phillip Grainger is a great roofer. 509-1006."

Here are some recommendations for Hair Salons and Barbershop that are recommended by the beautiful and handsome folks of Kiawah Island.  Please note these also included hair salon recommendations for weddings and events on Kiawah Island.

"Katana Truluck is a wonderful hair stylist who pays close attention to the
wishes of the client, the nature of her or his hair & does it at a good
price.  I've been with her a few years & find her work to be outstanding.

Her shop is - perhaps you know - OSKAR'S.  That's right. Oskar has retired
& Katana is keeping some of his fine barbers & she does the masterful good
styling.  She is the new owner.  So men who want a barber can still count
on Oskar's as the place to go."

Ginger Lockwood, co-owner of Salon 61 on Route 61. 769-6161.

"Colette at the spa at Bohicket is wonderful!"

"Pandora, owner of Prime Cuts, at Bohicket Marina 768-0911. I like her
cut and color better than my former stylist of nearly 20 years..."

"Not on the island but in Mt. Pleasant...Tresses ask for Malory"

"Call for Kay Houser at the new Prime Cuts salon at Bohicket."

"I can recommend Catherine at the Synergy Spa at Bohicket Marina"

"Our daughter used Russ Rickborn rickbornsalon.com/- for her 2006
Kiawah wedding. She did a trial run at his shop. Then, he came out to Kiawah
on the wedding day to do her hair and the bridesmaids' hair and makeup. Russ
was wonderful to work with, and everyone was very happy with the results!
Highly recommended!

On other occasions, our daughters have been pleased with Urban Nirvana."

"I've worked with Rhonda Bishop who has been known to come 'on site' for
these services.  She's a dear gal who aims to please at a nice price.
I've been happy with her work.  Her number is 843-559-2305."

Here are the recommendations for a Barbershop near Kiawah Island by the wonderful fellows of the Island.

"The "real  guys" go to Mooneys on Route 17.  Great haircuts even
though I have VERY little hair, always meet a Kiawah friend there and
it's less than half the price of the others suggested (maybe a third
of the price of Prime Cuts.)"

"I have used the Salon in Freshfields and have always been pleased
with their work.  They are reasonably priced as well."

"My recommendation is Oscars in South Windermere."

Drivers, Limos and Taxi Services from Kiawah Island

To contact us Click HERE
Here are the recommendations for Drivers, Limos and Taxi Services from Kiawah Island to the airport.

"Jerry Farber 484-951-5827 (cell)"

"Just a thought on the airport trip issue:  If you're staying more than a week-end and you have a car on the island (two conditions that may eliminate most of the respondents) it's cheaper to rent a car at CHS,
drive to the island, retrieve your own car and then turn in the rental within 24 hrs.  A one-day rental is $30. Repeat process the day before departure and you have transport to/from CHS for about 1/2 the going taxi rate."

"Have used several services and find the best is Dave at DBH limo (843-303-4761).  He is professional and personable and reasonable.  He just picked up a guest for us last night from a 11:45 pm flight."

"Jerry Farber is great, reliable, reasonable. (c) 484.951.5827. One time he wasn't available to pick up my daughter - also arriving very late in the evening - and he passed the job on to another
driver, Larry Blasch: (c)843.412.5704. The plane was an hour late. Landed at 1 a.m. and he was there to bring her to Kiawah."

"A One Limo service Joe Thomas  224-1523--very reliable and professional--I use at least 3 times a week for round trips to airport from Kiawah."
"MGM Limousine ServiceGeorge and Margrit McCall have been transporting my family for 15 years.  They are reasonable and great people.. 843-819-4726 or 843-819-6410."

"We have used Sammy's Transportation Services for years and years.  Their number is 814-9660.  We found them to be much more reasonable than any other of the services.  They have a van, nice cars, etc.  It just depends upon how many are in your group.  The rates are usually lower per person the more people there are.  They are very prompt!"

"Beres Executive Limousines and Charleston Executive Limo both offer discounts to Kiawah members. Beres (224-8631) offers a 10% discount and Charleston Executive (746-9000) offers a 20% discount."
