Freshfield's Village Farmer's Market Is Ripe for Visiting

To contact us Click HERE
Another summer is upon us and it’s about time. I was getting downright restless waiting on my favorite season of the year to roll around. After a beautiful, but mild spring, the sun is out in full force and is making its presence known here on Seabrook Island.
I’m not the only one who’s noticed either. Families are riding bikes and hanging out at the pool together, friends are kayaking on area creeks and I’ve even spotted a few lifelong buddies enjoying a friendly game of golf (or two.)
But if you want to be where all the action is, find everyone (and their dogs) enjoying the season’s best produce at the Freshfields Village Farmer’s Market.
Each Monday from 4-8 p.m. through August 29, local farmers, artists and food vendors set up shop under big white tents on the square and sell the freshest and the best seasonal fruits and veggies.
Trust me, you haven’t lived until you’ve had a Johns Island tomato fresh off the vine. In fact, you’ll wonder why anything else has the audacity to call itself a tomato after you bite into one of these fresh, juicy summertime treats.
Cut them up, add them up to a well-oiled, searing hot pot, toss in some diced onions (maybe a touch of jalapeno peppers or a bit of Tabasco sauce for a kick) sauté for about five minutes, add a touch of kosher salt then simmer with a couple of cups of water for about 10 minutes and you’ve got yourself a delicious, Southern staple. I mean you don’t know good food until you’ve eaten this dish served over rice.
Not in the mood to cook. That’s fine. You can also get prepared foods like tacos or kettle corn to snack on. And don’t be surprised if you see someone with a Seabrook Exclusives shirt lingering a bit longer than normal at the Charleston Spice Company’s tent. I found some lavender flowers and some lavender sugar I just can’t wait to add to my ice cold tea!!!
There’s plenty to eat, see and do at the Freshfields Village Farmer’s Market. Bring some friends and bring your pets, it’s the social event everyone craves during the summer.

Jewelery Appraisal Recommendations for Kiawah Island

To contact us Click HERE
This in an interesting post of Jewelery Appraisal and Marketing recommendations.  If you need your jewelery appraised for any reason, here are the recommendations by the residents of Kiawah Island.

"The team at Joint Venture Jewelry of 185 King Street, Charleston includes Solange Belle, whom I have known for years.  She is the one I strongly recommend. Phone 722-6730.  Joint Venture also then does marketing of jewelry on consignment if that might be of interest to you."

"Try Asset Archives (www.assetarchives.com ). They will complete the appraisal, inventory, make a digital image of each piece and provide you with a copy on a CD-ROM. They will also provide a summary list (with thumbnails) for your insurance provider or if you want to use for consignment purposes.  We've used them for our needs."

"Croghans Jewelry at 308 King Street.  They are a long established jeweler, and I have used their appraisal services. I received an appraisal with picture of item and value. They were recommended to me by an old Charleston family."

Backflow Issues on Kiawah Island

To contact us Click HERE
Every now and then you will go to your mailbox and receive the dreaded "Backflow Notice".  Enclosed will be a form for the Professional to fill out and return to the Kiawah Authorities.  There will also be a list of companies that work on the island that can perform the task.  Here are some comments as well as recommendations of whom to call off of the list.

"To another poster (sorry, I deleted post and don't remember name) who made the observation re exorbitant fees to do "mandated backflow valve check". The even bigger picture, my friend, is one of my pet peeves.  Residential backflow valve checks are simply a tremendous waste of money nationwide. In the history of mankind there has NEVER EVER been a documented case of significant morbidity let alone mortality due to backflow from RESIDENTIAL IRRIGATION
systems.  That's never, nada, zilch!  Enforcement of such an expensive (when looked at nationally) ridiculous requirement is spotty (I don't believe it's required at Seabrook for example, but correct me if I'm wrong) and just stop and consider the many millions and millions of dollars being wasted where it is enforced; that is wasted unless you're a plumber.  Want to get all riled up?  Now here's a cause."

"We use Naumann Plumbing every time we have to do it.  He collects a number of folks when the letters come out and comes out and does several at a time. We fax our paper to him and he takes care of the paper work.  So far the cost is $50."

"We use Al Nauman.  Phone is 843 559 5599."
"Call Mike Hennon with J.M. Hennon & Co. (843) 552-1358.  I have used him to regularly test several of my prevention valves (commercial and residential) as well as install new ones as needed."

Is Kiawah Island real estate really a bargain?

To contact us Click HERE

Kiawah Island found most cost-efficient in craftingsuper-luxurious house •

Foot for foot, an opulent Charleston area oceanside community offers the best deal when it comes to constructing an ultra-luxury beach home.
That’s according to a survey by Chris Pollack Ltd. of 10 top summer vacation destinations in the United States and nearby. The company describes itself as a “high-end real estate development advisory and owner’s representative” group.
Kiawah Island was the lowest cost in terms of construction per square foot at $450 and project cost per square foot at $585. By comparison, construction on highest-priced Hawaii is $950 a square foot and project cost is $1,300.
“Our study provides the high-net-worth individual with a unique window into what it actually costs to build second or summer homes in some of the most desirable locations in America,” says Chris Pollack, founder and president of Chris Pollack Ltd. This is the company’s first study of the most cost-effective places to build a luxury summer home, he says.
“In compiling this data we looked at not just construction costs, but overall project costs as well, which includes everything from building materials, architectural and consultant fees and even permitting, adding to the square footage cost by an average of 30 percent,” Pollack says. “High-net-worth buyers should be aware that not only do land prices vary from location to location, but so do construction and consultant costs,” he says.
Other markets and prices were Malibu, Calif., $900 per square foot construction and $1,170 a square foot project cost; Palm Beach, Fla., $850 and $1,105; Hamptons, N.Y., $850 and $1,105; Caribbean, $800 and $1,040; Miami, $750 and $975; Nantucket, Mass., $750 and $975; Cape Cod, Mass., $500 and $650; and Lake Geneva, Wis., $475 and $618.
According to the Pollack study, “value engineering” has lowered costs of the projects by 30 percent even as labor expenses on average are up in the markets by 13.8 percent from 2007. Among the examples of value engineering are using PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) tubing in place of copper and utilizing a blend of traditional fiber glass insulation and spray foam, which both save money, he says.
Also, by taking advantage of tax incentive programs and using green building products such as geothermal heating systems, the company’s clients have cut cots while making investments towards environmentally friendly homes.
“Our summer home analysis provides a spot look at the high-end market, keeping clients abreast of the best locations based on an equalizing of per square foot costs,” Pollack says, noting that the study is the first of seasonal analyses to come. This article was originally published in The Post and Courier.

The following are actual figures given by folks who have built on Kiawah Island.

"The number we saw last year was north of $300 sq. ft. and that was when there was much less activity.  Amazing number in my view; for that you could have (almost literally) gold plated fixtures in Houston."

"Fred it trulydepends on what you put in your house..Can range from $300 to $500 depending on your specs.."

Cable, Internet and Phone Recommendations for Kiawah Island

To contact us Click HERE
With the wonderful seclusion, privacy and natural beauty of the island comes a few drawbacks we all live with.  One of the drawbacks happens to be less than stellar service of cable, phone and Internet on the island.  We have come a long way even in just a few short years but the questions and debates continue.  So here are the recommendations for phone, cable and Internet service companies on Kiawah Island.

"Why not wait for AT&T U-Verse.  Once you sign the Direct TV contract you are committed for 2 years.  We have Dish and are very happy.  But can't wait for U-Verse which is already on the Island in sections.  Go on line and check to see if it is available to you yet.  And stop by the AT&T store on Hwy17 (near Stein Mart & Harris Teeter) to check it out."

"Well, you have to compare apples to apples to get a price comparison.  U-verse supplies all three connections you are interested in, phone (no charge long distance within the US), TV (all the channels and HD and old-style) and blazing Internet connectivity that Mary Johnson has talked about.

When considering all three, it is pretty clear to me that U-verse is less expensive as a package than cable + phone or DTV + phone.  Besides it provides the blazing Internet connectivity needed for streaming video etc. that you cannot get with DSL.

We are a customer of both DTV at Kiawah and U-verse elsewhere.  There is no doubt that we will switch our Kiawah home to U-verse when we get the chance. I understand that they are now running their Kiawah service through a normal test to ensure it is smooth before offering to a wider customer base.

On the issue of fibre...  The fibre is not run to your home.   The fibre connects to a drop at various places on the island.   The regular copper wires take the signals the rest of the way.
I think this is a pretty impressive technology."

"U-Verse sounds good, but my concern is that it's offered by AT&T. I've generally found AT&T to be expensive, non-responsive and about as bureaucratic as the DMV. Recently, I switched to Comcast Internet (12.0 service that routinely measures at 18+) as AT&T would only provide terrible
1.5 DSL as they said their 6.0 ports were all filled. I switched from Direct to Dish a few years ago as Dish had better receiver technology, though I think Direct has caught up. If I were getting service today, I'd compare the offering packages of each and go with whatever suits my interests best."

"Do it! (Direct TV)  Much better technology, and a great deal for the first two years."

"You can't get the Internet on satellite.  We use Hulu and other web sources to watch most shows.....(but no news). U-verse will have both.  I think both Comcast and Direct are scrambling to get people locked into contracts before U-verse is available. Their fiber-optic technology is the way things are heading. I'm waiting for that."

"No brainier in my opinion.  With the lousy Comcast service it amazes me that we let them continually dig up our island.  Only occasional problem I have had with Direct TV is with very heavy rain, and that is usually minuets, not hours."

"I second the wait 4 uverse."

"The u-verse fees are considerably greater than DTV."

"There are so many extra benefits.  You can bundle DSL with phone long distance and TV for best rate.  For example, now DSL is offered up to 6.0 (speed).  With U-Verse it can go up to 18.0.  You TV can be wireless. So you can move it from room to room for special reasons, such as Super Bowl
watching in a bigger room.  It is not just basic TV programming service. Stop by the store and check it out."

"I have had Directv for over 5 years.  I have been very pleased.  If you follow sports, this is the way to go, great programing and access, I have had very few problems and when I have, the response was excellent. Heavy rains will interrupt the signal, but haven't had too many instances where that has happened."

"We switched to Dish several years ago...love it."

"We had the triple play from Comcast for several years, and just switched our TV service to Direct.  Comcast service was fine, but their price kept going up and up every year.  The intro offer sounds fine, until you start adding in DVR, HD, additional rooms, fees, taxes, etc, etc.  The $129 offer
quickly becomes almost $200.

"DTV technology and features are way, way better than Comcast, and their intro price for 2 years saves me over $50/month."

"I agree about the net cost of DTV and AT&T (phone, DSL).  I'm going to sit tight until ATT starts delivering Uverse on the island and then switch.  We have the Uverse service at another residence."

"Not sure, but I can tell you that we have ATT DSL Extreme 6.0 and maybe someone else on the list can tell us the speed of some other alternatives."

"When I use speakeasy speed test and click on "Atlanta", I get 5.75 Mbps down and 0.43 Mbps up. While it is pretty reliable, I notice it does not always seem fast-- has some sluggish periods that seem to last less than an hour here or there. Bill says we pay $30 per month - $43 less a credit.  I know they are planning to change their offerings soon and offer some faster alternatives."

"Randy Shaw at A-Line Construction is excellent.  Did our home on Kiawah."" A pleasure to deal with, both in person and in an "absentee" project.

"Harborside Remodeling (843-559-9933, www.harborsideremodeling.com) is excellent."  "We also used them when we had a raccoon problem and needed to redo the underside of the house.  We haven't had a problem since."

"Rampart Construction, (Maybank Highway, Charleston), built our house and also does renovations.  They were excellent to work with, budget conscious and on time.  We would highly recommend them to anyone."

"I just wanted to share what a great experience we had with our contractor, Colin Regan with River Creek Construction.  We did some additions and renovations to our Sparrow Pond Cottage,
including all new kitchen and master bath. My husband and I are both architects. I will leave it to your imagination what kind of clients we are. I was concerned about doing a personal project
like this from a distance (we are from TN), but Colin just took care of it. He was in constant communication with us, and I had no worries throughout the entire process. I can't recall ever working with a contractor who paid so much attention to the details and was so "on top of things" that he finished the project early and under budget. I have to say that he and his crews definitely exceeded our expectations.  His phone # is 843-514-6487

I don't want to sound like a commercial, I just feel like when someone
does such an outstanding job, they deserve some recognition."

"It's great to see positive comments like this.  We feel exactly the same way about MYRON HINTON, BERESFORD CONSTRUCTION.  He's done several additions and renovations for us at our Night Heron Cottage.  We plan to do more, as do several of our neighbors.  Thank you..."

"Myron Hinton of Beresford Construction (843-708-1838) replaced our front deck and that of our friends down the street.  He has also completely remodeled both cottages, including the only room extensions in Night Heron, bathrooms, kitchens, fireplaces, etc.  We are very pleased with his work.  He builds as if it were his own.  There is a lot of work being done in Night Heron, and his really stands out with regard to quality, care, and materials.  His experience from having done such
extensive improvements at Night Heron is invaluable!..."

"Curt Watts recently completed a new kitchen for us as well as a porch.  He was a delight to work with and a professional throughout.  I've recommended him to several other friends as well and they too have been delighted with his work.  His number is 843-200-2079."

"If you are looking for an exceptional contractor that charges fair prices you should contact Maurice Mangan @ 843 425 1511. Mo is the best."

"I want to highly recommend Justin Liepman, who runs his company Sea Islands Construction.  He is a general contractor who has done some great house repair work for us, including decks, walkways, siding, plumbing, HVAC and some electric.  He has done a fantastic job.  His contact info is: 843.513.2415, or seaislands@gmail.com."

"I would suggest that you call John Glyder, at Carter-Lambert (843-768-3080x 2).  He does an excellent job, and is fairly priced."
"We are in the final stages of a major remodeling of our Sparrow Pond cottage
being done by Carter Lambert.  We have been extremely pleased and would strongly
encourage you to talk with them.  John Glyder has managed our project and he has
been terrific to work with for the last few months."

"We did major renovation on our Windswept kitchen and two bathrooms and worked with Jack Hider.
Jack lives on Seabrook, is great on smaller jobs, very personal and very, very reasonable.   His two sons work with him and he is extremely hands-on.   We did this all long-distance and Jack was good at emailing questions, pictures, etc. and allowing us to make choices of products online or at our Home Depot.
We had used several of those on your list previously and found Jack's personal service to be better and more affordable for us.   Very good experience.  Jack Hider  843-768-9975."

"We have used Coastal Construction a lot. They are fine, responsible, over-priced (like everyone), do a decent job but nothing outstanding.  We have used them for decks, painting, garage door, etc."
"Coastal Construction - 559-3400.  They are our go to guys for all home improvements.? They have done insulation under our home -always reliable, excellent job, reasonable costs and great people to boot."  "Call Les Scott @ 559-3400."

"Centerline builders 860 3535"

"We used Lenny's for our Mariner's Watch Villa.  We completely remodeled it.  Lenny was extremely fast and efficient.  The price was very competitive.  He does great follow-up and since he is on the island all the time very quick response.
LENNY'S Kiawah Services
Office (843) 768-0055 - Fax
(843) 768-0057 www.KiawahServices.com"

"Charleston Construction  totally remodeled our condo at MarinersWatch and a fantastic job! Shawn Foster is the owner and used to work for Buffington Homes. 460-4712."
"About 7 years ago we wanted to convert a screen porch into a sun room. We had the job bid out and plans done. Palmer was the highest bid. We had a friend who worked for Buffington who bid out the job and completed the work in a very cost efficient way. They had a top line architect do a simple sketch and the results were wonderful. Buffington over Palmer any time."

"We are having a Night Heron remodel done by Palmer Construction.  We checked with three contractors and Palmer came highly recommended.  We are so very pleased with their knowledge and they stay in very close contact with us.  There are several instances where they called to say that something did not need to be done and they would credit us.  Seem to be very honest."
"Palmer Construction is always good ,have used then for years 843 762-0181"

"I have had experience working with these guys (Eagle Building Partners) on several projects with my clients/homeowners.  They will not be your lowest bid but do excellent work."

"We had R.M. Buck remodel our two bedroom villa on the sea and they did a magnificent job. We highly recommend them. In fact, we were so satisfied with their work that we asked them to build our new home in Kiawah."

"Blue Herron has done a great job with the renovation of our master bath."

"I would enthusiastically recommend Jim Ambrose (West-Rose Construction). He did a great job on a pretty complete renovation of our place on Surfscoter."

"K and T nails. Very clean professional. Next to Curves. Mother and daughter owned. Also fo reasonably priced facials now"

"Susie Stroupe at Synergy Day Spa (843) 768-4777 .  It is located at Bohicket Marina."

"Yes, K & T Nails (559-3700 ) is at Maybank and Bohicket.   I think someone suggested
Prime Cuts (768-0911)  at River Road and Betsy Kerrison.  And even closer is Southern Style Salon at Freshfields (768-HAIR)."

"I'm not sure if you have included Susie Stroupe for nail services at Synergy Spa at Bohicket Marina and would like to make a recommendation.  Shedoes wonderful manicures and miracles with pedicures. She provides the best pedicures that I've ever had. On my first visit, she took extra time to provide the service that I needed.

In addition to superior service, the view of Bohicket Marina from the spa chair is relaxing and inviting.

I highly recommend Susie at Synergy and hope that others know about this hidden treasure in the corner of Bohicket Marina."

From the responses, K and T nails, located at the Big Pig, was the overwhelming winner even though it is the furthest from the islands.

If you are looking to update that favorite chair or couch, or maybe your renters have been a little too rough on the furniture, here are a few recommendations for Upholsters near Kiawah Island.

"We have used Powells on Johns Island with good results, (843) 556-8892 ."  They pick up and deliver.

"I am using Jerry Lynch  on 17 north(just pass Mt Pleasant) for reupholstering some pieces from  my shop and he does a great job for a very good price,I believe he is the best today in Charleston"

"Powell's Upholstery did an excellent job for us, as well. They even determined the required yardage, and gave me other advice, so that I could choose and supply my own fabric. I had multiple pieces done while we were remodeling.  Powell's picked up the furniture on schedule, completed the work ahead of schedule, and held it for me until I was ready for redelivery. Very nice people to work with, and their craftsmanship is excellent. I highly recommend them."
Powell's Upholstery received many raves about the craftsmanship, advice and pricing.

Exterminator Recommendations for Kiawah Island

To contact us Click HERE
Living on this beautiful island comes with a few minor unwanted pests such as "Palmetto Bugs, Swamp Rats and other unsavory creatures" Here are the recommendations for the professional that can eliminate any problems. Check out what the island has to say about Exterminators.

"A good question to ask is exactly what termite damage does the bond cover.  Before you answer "What the termites eat, dummy"  realize that, unfortunately, with some policies that is all too true.  The critters ingest your wood framing and the cost of replacing said wood is covered.   However, the surprise may be that the cost of ripping out and replacing drywall and ceilings as well as re-painting them and perhaps taking up and putting down carpets etc. to get to the damage is not covered.  You see, termites didn't actually damage that stuff, you did."

"Talk with Devin Pringle of Terminix 557-0051."  "Yep. Devin with Terminix is the best!"

"The Clemson Extension Service can provide unbiased information about termite treatment and other pest control."

"We used Steve Reginier of A-Advanced Pest Control, or regular bug guy.  Our problem was significant and his resolution was effective.  You might give him a call at 843-509-9992."  "Well, not sure if he still does it, but know first hand that Steve at A - Advanced handles rodents. He took care of a rat problem in our rental house and our current home a few years ago."
"Pied Piper 745.0203- - ask for John."
"Ricky Miller @ Miller Pest Management!  We feel absolutely confident recommending him as he is thorough and trustworthy.  He has the key to our home.  843.889.1298 or 795.0386"  "Ricky Miller is fair, honest, and an all-around good guy."

"We have happily used Ledford's for 16 years."  (843) 766-8298
"Palmetto is very conscientious and courteous.  We just had Argentine ANT eating our cottage and they have taken care of it. 766-9701"

"Would consider Dodson Exterminators. They have handled pests( including mice)& termite bonds for us in Virginia, Alabama & SC. Very professional --theycheck for Formosa & say they are probably here but can be handled. "Richard"is agent in charge of this area & provides an incredible check for insects allover the house.767-1218."

"In my opinion they are the best. Been using Rusty at Home Team and have referred him to many Property owners." 769-5877
Well this one was interesting because three companies received most of the postive reviews.  Steve with A-Advanced Pest Control has a very loyal following on the island as well as Devin with Terminix.  Ricky at Miller Pest Control also received many positive reviews.

Where to buy Shrimp while on Kiawah Island

To contact us Click HERE
Here are some recommendations on where to buy good local shrimp while on Kiawah Island or Seabrook Island.

"My disclaimer is that I have spent a career in the Food Service Business and am a culinary graduate.

Crosby's on route 17 (392 Spring Street) is my absolute favorite.  New buyers must understand is that there is nothing retail about this place.  It is the very last shop that sells to the public in the original Crosby's chain.  I have only dealt with three people, a couple of senior women who have worked at this location forever and have told me that when they die I'll have to shop someplace else. The
young boy who usually waits on me is very special particularly if you talk with him about music or films which are his dream future avocations.  I understand that there is another fish cutter in the
back at times but I have never seen him.  The display isn't set out until the place is open and then just a few pieces of the types of fresh fish that will be available that day are laid out.  One or two more pieces are freshly cut and laid out when one is sold. (There is also a freezer with some delightful choices such as shrimp, shark and crab meat)  You get wholesale prices.  I enjoy going to Newton Farms and comparing prices which are at least 25% less expensive. Since the company is primarily wholesale (Kiawah, McGrady's,Cypress,Amens etc.) some of the exotic choices such as my very favorite Trigger Fish and Wreck Fish don't come in until 2 or 3 PM and aren't available in the
morning because the restaurant orders come first.  But there is virtually always some variety that I have never heard of such as an unbelievable pink salmon and even with my so called credentials that I don't know how to cook.  The young man will gladly tell me what he suggests. (Very fresh fish cooks much faster than even next day fish)

The key to choosing a place to purchase or eat fresh fish is that you can't smell any fish odor.  I will not purchase fish in a restaurant or store where I am able to smell the fish. (even if it's not the fish
dish I plan to order)

The location is convenient for me because whenever I visit MUSC I cook fish that evening.  My guests are most often my food service colleagues so I make an occasional separate trip because I always serve local fish to out of town guests.  It is just on the other side of the bridge going to the crossover. If you take keep on 17 over the bridge you will go past the shop, just make U turn at the Wendy's stay to the right and it's the very last store before you go across the river.  It's adjacent to the Marriott Hotel. You can call the shop and tell hem if you want a special fish and if I make it a strong point that I must have Trigger Fish, for example and they will try to get it for me.  The way I find out what's local that day is to call Amens or McGrady's and ask them if it's on the menu."

"We go to Crosby's on 17 in Charleston regularly.  The trick is, don't plan what you want ahead.  Just go in and buy what looks good.  They often have really good, fresh grouper or snapper.  The shrimp is always good as a fall back.

Freshfield does have good shrimp in a pinch, but expensive.  Their tilapia is usually good and reasonable priced, but other than that their fish usually
looks old."

"Crosby's Seafood at  Folly Beach."  "see...more reasons to go to folly beach..."

"I agree with Crosby's near Folly Beach.  They usually have wonderful local clams and the seafood is fresh.  I was not happy with their location on 17 as it crosses the Charleston peninsula.  Also consider Harris Teeter on Folly Rd.  Probably not local but it seems fresh."

"
Cherry Point Seafood on Wadmalaw is great for shrimp right off the boat.  Rosebank Farms sells local shrimp, grouper, flounder, and tuna from the ice chests near the check out stand. Also, I have found excellent seafood (local and otherwise) at the fish department in Earth Fare supermarket, in the
Windemere Shopping Center on James Island."

"Crosby's Seafood at Folly Beach."

"We have bought shrimp several times at the little shrimp hut on the side of the street on Savanah Hwy.  When you get to the corner of Main Road and Savanah Hwy turn left and it is a couple miles on the left.  It actually looks like a little shrimp Hut building all by itself.  Always good shrimp at a good price."
Here is an interesting video of a small shrimp boat off of Kiawah Island.

Restaurant Recommendations off of Kiawah Island

To contact us Click HERE
If you want to know where the best restaurants are in the area you ask a local.  Here is where the locals go when they want to leave the island for a great meal.  If you feel like getting off of the Island for the day, here is a Very Long List of recommendations for Great Restaurants in Charleston and Mount Pleasant.  You just can't go wrong in Charleston.

"Eurasia, in the Whole Foods Shoping Center in Mt Pleasant is terrific, 915 Houston Northcutt Boulevard Mount Pleasant, (843) 606-2616.   Lana's,  210 Rutledge Avenue Charleston(843) 720-8899 katty corner to Hominy Grill is very good and also Trattoria Lucca,  downtown, 41 Bogard St # A Charleston, 843-973-3323."

"If you want good Asian, Mt Pleasant has Bambu-- VERY good.  604 Coleman Boulevard Mount Pleasant, (843) 284-8229."
"FIG is our current favorite.  232 Meeting Street Charleston, (843) 805-5900
If you want to take a trip over the Cooper River bridge
Red Drum in Mt Pleasant, 803 Coleman Boulevard, (843) 849-0313

 Atlanticville on Sullivan's Island, 2063 Middle Street, (843) 883-9452

The Boathouse on Isle of Palms, 101 Palm Boulevard, (843) 886-8000."

"If you want charm, Fulton Five, 5 Fulton Street Charleston, (843) 853-5555."

"Husk is Southern Gourmet.  No, I assure you that is not an oxymoron.  Husk touts all fresh ingredients.
I had the squab, truly magnifico.  Pigeons shot that morning in Battery Park I believe.
76 Queen Street Charleston, 577-2500Stop at their bar in adjacent building for thin sliced country
ham & libation."

"If you like Italian…..we have been to Pane e Vino….several times and it has been terrific
each time. 17 Warren Street Charleston, (843) 853-5955 "

"We  highly recommend Chez Fish. 768-8901  We have just had dinner there and the service and food
were very good.  Give it a try if you have not done  so since it reopened."  Located at 3966
Betsy Kerrison Pkwy.

"I love Mexican Food.  The place that I go to most often is ZIA, 406-8877, 19564A Maybank Highway, (near the Terrace Theater).  When ever we go to a movie at the Terrace we go there.  It is very inexpensive and very good.  You order your food at the counter and it's delivered to you fresh and hot while you are snacking on fresh tacos and salsa.  It's very informal, owned by Kevin Grant a University of Houston graduate who follows the Tex-Mex style. There have never been any of our local Mexican friends there.

When my wife is away as she will be next week I go the El Mercadito, 559-7216 next to the Big Piggly Wiggly.  Very authentic, very cheap. very Mexican, not Tex-Mex.  I am usually the only or one the few gringos there but I love a pitcher of San Gria and if I have a waiter that speaks English I explore different things. They have a $5.00 lunch Buffet that can't be beat."

"We've had lunch, dinner and brunch at a great, new Charleston restaurant.  For all of you who love great Italian, try "Cesca Ristorante & Trattoria, (843)718-2580" Charleston.  It is located right behind SNOB off East Bay.

Wonderful New York atmosphere, great food, good prices.  Really yummy
"Husk and McCrady's and their executive chef, Homer Sean Brock, are the subject of this New Yorker article, "True Grits: In Charleston, a quest to revive authentic Southern cooking" by Burkhard Bilger."  "It might be a little more difficult to get a table now."
"Let me put my two cents in since we live part of the week in Charleston.

Our two favorite restaurants are SNOB, 843-723-3424, and FIG. But the bar on the 2nd floor of Cypress, 727-0111,  is fabulous for cocktails, wine, appetizers or a late night light dinner. Of course, Peninsula Grill, 723-0700, is a great dessert stop - especially if you like their celebrated coconut cake.
Brunch Sunday is at High Cotton, 724-3815,  - the best. Hominy Grill, 937-0930, any lunch time for true Charleston home cookin' and the best desserts, IMHO.

The Rooftop at the Vendue Inn, 577-7970,  is a fun stop, young and touristy with a fabulous view and music. Market Pavilion Hotel, 877-440-2250,  is a little more upscale, also with view. Social,  577-5665, on East Bay is also young and has many options for wine. Who doesn't want to tap into what 20-30 somethings are into now?

Closed for Business, 853-8466,  on north King St. if you're a beer aficionado. Also, on N. King for cocktails and great music - Chai - cool outdoor garden in Basil, 724-3490."
"SNOB (Slightly North of Broad) on East Bay-great food, atmosphere & service."

"When our son and his wife were visiting last week, we had a drink at the rooftop bar in the Market Pavillion Hotel (I think its 225) that is on EastBay across from The Customs House. The view is wonderful! 877-440-2250"
"Also, two of my favorite restaurants are FIG and Circa 1886, (843) 853-7828."

"I'm surprised no one has mentioned Hege's. It is our favorite for arestaurant close to Kiawah. (843) 768-0035."

"The request was specifically for Charleston. Otherwise, I would have said Atlantic Room and Ocean Room! Both are on Kiawah Island.

Red's Ice House on Bohicket Marina, 843-518-5515, is for atmosphere, sunsets, drinks, music and inexpensive food.  Something Kiawah has needed for a long time. They are also doing the sunset boat rides from 6:30 to 8:30 on Mon, Wed and Fridays, cash bar, and you can bring your own food/picnic. Cost is $25 for Adults and $15 for 13 and under.

Hege's is  consistently good food with a great atmosphere. Jasmine Porch, is too expensive, but good. Rosebank Farm's Cafe, 768-1807, and Lucy's Red Sky Grill 768-8118, are really good for fresh local seafood and veggies."
"Best Steaks - Grill 225 (amazing escargot)
Best Seafood - Dressy Peninsula Grill, Anson's, Hank's
Best Seafood - Casual Coast, 82 Queen
Best Regional - FIG, Magnolia's and Poogan's Porch
Best Fresh Local Ingredients/Veggie dishes  - Cru Cafe, Hominy Grill
Best All around  - Charleston Grill, SNOB, High Cotton"

"Our favorite brunch will guests is the Mills House.  Usually very nice music and great food choices from the local farms and seafood houses.  Get  a reservation and ask sit near the piano player.  To me the "food walk" is something we did when we were young.  That said the Market Pavilion is great for cocktails and SNOB , Hymans or Magnolias is the best for dinner.  Frankly I can't imagine going just for dessert unless it's after theater.

One day in Charleston..not enough."

"In the past we have worked with Shawn M. Flanagan with Buist, Moore, Smythe & McGee @ 5 Exchange Street, Charleston  720-4632
Shawn is a certified specialist in taxation law, estate planning & probate law.  We found him to be very pleasant to work with as well."
"Yes, I've just completed some comprehensive updates with Patricia Scarborough, JD of Evans Carter Kunes Bennett in CHS. Her contact information is: 115 Church Street CHS‎ SC‎ 29401  (843) 577-2300."
"For legal planning, we have been very pleased with Jennifer Davis at Nelson Mullins.  She researched a couple of unusual situations for us very thoroughly and thoughtfully, did not waste time that might be billed, but at the same time gave us all the time we needed.  SC laws were very different from NY so our planning had to be very different.  Jennifer was recommended to us a local
family member who is a top attorney.  I would be happy to talk with you about her." 843.853.5200
"Bob Kunes has wonderful credentials and he is a nice guy.  His number is 577-2300 and he is downtown.  Kunes@eckb.com

My husband is an estate planning attorney, but not in South Carolina, and he recommends Bob."

Freshfield's Village Farmer's Market Is Ripe for Visiting

"Randy Shaw at A-Line Construction is excellent.  Did our home on Kiawah."" We use Randy Shaw of A-Line Construction, and have nothing but praise for his level of responsibility and quality; moreover, he is ALWAYS where he says he will be at the time he says. A pleasure to deal with, both in person and in an "absentee" project.

"We just did a complete renovation on Surfscoter.  I would recommend Colin Regan with River Creek Construction.   I do not normally recommend contractors but in the case I will make the recommendation.  We really liked his work and we were not here most of the time."

"Our experience is the same. They've done a lot for us. They're delightful to work with - professional, prompt, careful, reasonably priced. The man that does their stone work is an artist."

Mo is the best."

encourage you to talk with them.

"Blue Herron has done a great job with the renovation of our master bath."

"I would enthusiastically recommend Jim Ambrose (West-Rose Construction). He did a great job on a pretty complete renovation of our place on Surfscoter."
