Freshfield's Village Farmer's Market Is Ripe for Visiting

Another summer is upon us and it’s about time. I was getting downright restless waiting on my favorite season of the year to roll around. After a beautiful, but mild spring, the sun is out in full force and is making its presence known here on Seabrook Island.
I’m not the only one who’s noticed either. Families are riding bikes and hanging out at the pool together, friends are kayaking on area creeks and I’ve even spotted a few lifelong buddies enjoying a friendly game of golf (or two.)
But if you want to be where all the action is, find everyone (and their dogs) enjoying the season’s best produce at the Freshfields Village Farmer’s Market.
Each Monday from 4-8 p.m. through August 29, local farmers, artists and food vendors set up shop under big white tents on the square and sell the freshest and the best seasonal fruits and veggies.
Trust me, you haven’t lived until you’ve had a Johns Island tomato fresh off the vine. In fact, you’ll wonder why anything else has the audacity to call itself a tomato after you bite into one of these fresh, juicy summertime treats.
Cut them up, add them up to a well-oiled, searing hot pot, toss in some diced onions (maybe a touch of jalapeno peppers or a bit of Tabasco sauce for a kick) sauté for about five minutes, add a touch of kosher salt then simmer with a couple of cups of water for about 10 minutes and you’ve got yourself a delicious, Southern staple. I mean you don’t know good food until you’ve eaten this dish served over rice.
Not in the mood to cook. That’s fine. You can also get prepared foods like tacos or kettle corn to snack on. And don’t be surprised if you see someone with a Seabrook Exclusives shirt lingering a bit longer than normal at the Charleston Spice Company’s tent. I found some lavender flowers and some lavender sugar I just can’t wait to add to my ice cold tea!!!
There’s plenty to eat, see and do at the Freshfields Village Farmer’s Market. Bring some friends and bring your pets, it’s the social event everyone craves during the summer.

Swim with the dolphins at Seabrook Island

When you visit Seabrook Island you are almost guaranteed to see the adorable atlantic bottle nose dolphins that make their home in our local waters.  In the Atlantic Ocean, bottlenose dolphins are found from Nova Scotia to Patagonia and from Norway to the tip of South Africa. They are the most abundant dolphin species along the United States coast from Cape Cod through the Gulf of Mexico.  We enjoy a large, year round population of the ecotype known as coastal bottlenose dolphins.  In general, the coastal ecotype seems to be adapted for warm, shallow waters. Its smaller body and larger flippers offer increased maneuverability and help with heat dissipation. These dolphins are found in abundance traveling through our local creeks and along the shoreline.

In the early morning and evening the dolphins are most active as they search for food.  It's an amazing experience to watch them herd fish. They herd schools of fish against a sand bar or shoreline to trap them in shallow water where they are easy prey! Here is a picture taken by Sherri.  She is at North Beach on Seabrook Island watching the dolphins firm up their dinner plans.  The pelicans also benefit from the efforts of the dolphins.  Be sure to say hi to Flipper the next time you visit us at Seabrook Island.

Alan Fleming Sr. Open Clay Court State Championship Tournament, October 6-10, 2010

 The 27th Alan Fleming Senior Open Clay Court State Championship, to be held at the Seabrook Island Racquet Club, was recently voted “South Carolina Adult Tournament of the Year”.  This is a South Carolina Level 1 State Championship event as well as a Southern 200 point tournament with 44 events including singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.Age categories for both men and women range from 40 years old to over 80 years. 

The event was originally established in 1981 under the leadership of Seabrook resident Alan Fleming, a resident of Seabrook Island along with his wife Sally. Before moving to Seabrook, Alan had been a nationally ranked tennis player whose resume included matches played at Forest Hills, the precursor to the US Open.  Alan was a NJ State champion and a National Father-Son champion with son Peter.  Alan was often ranked #1 in his age group in both New Jersey and South Carolina.  The tournament, originally called the Seabrook Island Senior Tennis Tournament, ran continuously until Hurricane Hugo forced a two year hiatus in 1989. After Alan’s death in 1997, the tournament was renamed in his honor.   His son, Peter, went on to become a tennis professional and in the early 80’s was the Seabrook Island Club’s touring pro. But, it was with his doubles partner, John McEnroe, that Peter made tennis history.  Together, Peter Fleming and John McEnroe won over 50 doubles titles including four at Wimbledon and three at the U.S. Open.

In 2001, the tournament added a fundraising component for Hospice of Charleston including the Hospice House, a 20+ bed facility opened in 2006.  Last year’s tournament donated over $30,000 to benefit Hospice.  In recognition of the nearly $150,000 donated over the last eight years, one of the rooms in the Hospice facility is named in honor of the Seabrook Island tennis community. Over the years, participation in the tournament has grown to over 250 players from all over the Southeast and beyond.  In 2007, the tournament received its current designation as a South Carolina Level 1 State Championship event and a Southern section 200 point tournament - one of only four events at this prestigious level in a nine state region.

Virginias on King

One of my favorite Saturday outings is the farmers market followed by brunch at Virginias on King.  The Charleston Farmers Market is located in Marion Square in downtown Charleston.  The market offers an abundance of locally grown produce, fresh pastas and artisinal cheeses, flowers, juried arts and crafts, and live entertainment.  Many folks bring their dogs.  Last weekend I even saw a cat in a stroller!!  After purchasing a few treats my friends and I head to Virginias on King for a leisurely Saturday brunch. 


Virginias restaurant is the perfect combination of traditional southern recipes updated with a modern flair. Each dish is lovingly prepared with the freshest, local ingredients.  The menu changes seasonally with a true farm to table philosophy.   The pimento cheese appetizer with crackers reminds you of sitting on the porch at grandmas with a glass of tea, but grandmas never tasted this good!  On a recent visit the menu offered classic shrimp and grits, BLT with fried green tomatoes, fried oyster and spinach salad and butter bean and cornbread casserole just to name a few choices!  The sandwiches come with sweet potato fries and blue cheese coleslaw.  Oh my everything is so tasty! 



Virginias is named for Virginia Bennett, a fine southern lady who understands the importance of family and good food.  Each week the Bennett family gathers for a family meal to share time, love and of course some great cooking!  This is a tradition started in 1939 and still carries on today.

I used to own one of those big pulley system weight machines. It cost me a couple of thousand dollars and was really good quality. I sold it on Ebay for $150 last year.Now I use low cost equipment and get heaps better results. I can go outside and train, or I can train in front of the television. I can train in the living room and watch the kids at the same time. Or I can pack it all up and take it to the park and train with friends and clients in a different setting. No longer am I stuck in the study. And as I said, the results have been amazing. So what do I use?First off I would recommend a good set of adjustable dumbbells. You know the ones where you can add or remove weight plates as required. I actually have a couple of sets. One I keep quite heavy for use with leg exercises and one set that I change around a lot more depending on what exercises I am doing. These will probably be your most expensive purchase, but you will use them over and over. There are so many different ways to use them and you can easily work your whole body in any number of ways. Almost any exercise can be done with a set of dumbbells.Another piece of fitness equipment I use a lot are my medicine balls. There are so many different ways to use medicine balls too. You can get them quite cheap at large sporting goods stores or from the internet. I use a 4kg one and a 6 kg one. I use these in every session with my Personal Training clients and Bootcamps too. They are great to use on your own or for partner work.One of my most used pieces of equipment is a step. I had a friend build me one from some timber he had laying around. It is about 12 inches high and wide and about 4 foot long. Clients can get on either end of it and step up and down together. It is amazing how much harder they can go with someone else to keep up with.

The step combines well with the dumbbells or the medicine ball for step ups, step downs, sideways step ups, lungeing off the box or onto the box or even dips off the side. You can also jump on and off the box or even use it to do push ups with. Put your hands on it to make them easier, or your feet to make it harder. Clients that find it hard to get up and down from the floor, can even do ab exercises on it and it doubles as a bench as well. To improve fitness, a step is invaluable.Another cheap piece of fitness equipment is the humble skipping rope. Uses are obvious and you will be surprised how hard it is if you haven't tried it lately. If you persist though, you will improve your fitness really quickly with regular jump rope sessions and they are great for weight loss too.There are many other inexpensive items to include in your home gym set up. These can include resistance bands which are great to take on holidays and yoga type mats which come in real handy when training outside on hard surfaces. Kettlebells are a great item to have, but they can be quite expensive so search around for them. There are many suppliers on the net. I use them a lot in my training sessions and my clients love them too. There are many kettlebell exercises for either strength development, endurance improvement or fat burning, and they work really, really well.These are just some of the inexpensive ways to equip your home gym. Don't be fooled into thinking you need an expensive pinloaded weight machine. Another summer is upon us and it’s about time. I was getting downright restless waiting on my favorite season of the year to roll around. After a beautiful, but mild spring, the sun is out in full force and is making its presence known here on Seabrook Island.
I’m not the only one who’s noticed either. Families are riding bikes and hanging out at the pool together, friends are kayaking on area creeks and I’ve even spotted a few lifelong buddies enjoying a friendly game of golf (or two.)
But if you want to be where all the action is, find everyone (and their dogs) enjoying the season’s best produce at the Freshfields Village Farmer’s Market.
Each Monday from 4-8 p.m. through August 29, local farmers, artists and food vendors set up shop under big white tents on the square and sell the freshest and the best seasonal fruits and veggies.
Trust me, you haven’t lived until you’ve had a Johns Island tomato fresh off the vine. In fact, you’ll wonder why anything else has the audacity to call itself a tomato after you bite into one of these fresh, juicy summertime treats.
Cut them up, add them up to a well-oiled, searing hot pot, toss in some diced onions (maybe a touch of jalapeno peppers or a bit of Tabasco sauce for a kick) sauté for about five minutes, add a touch of kosher salt then simmer with a couple of cups of water for about 10 minutes and you’ve got yourself a delicious, Southern staple. I mean you don’t know good food until you’ve eaten this dish served over rice.
Not in the mood to cook. That’s fine. You can also get prepared foods like tacos or kettle corn to snack on. And don’t be surprised if you see someone with a Seabrook Exclusives shirt lingering a bit longer than normal at the Charleston Spice Company’s tent. I found some lavender flowers and some lavender sugar I just can’t wait to add to my ice cold tea!!!
There’s plenty to eat, see and do at the Freshfields Village Farmer’s Market. Bring some friends and bring your pets, it’s the social event everyone craves during the summer.
